A love not diminished by time
Sometimes we get asked to be a Deputy for a client. This is where they no longer have sufficient capacity to make their own decisions and there is no one in place that already has a power of attorney.
One particular client had been moved into a care home, she had dementia but also suffered with hoarding. She had been served with an environmental health notice
In one room in a long-forgotten chest tied up with string were many photographs. Most of the paperwork in the property was heavily soiled due to rodent infestation and our client’s inability to manage however these were all intact. We purchased a photo album and carefully incorporated all of the photos.
When we took her the album, her eyes lit up as she saw photos of herself as a young girl, teenager and young woman. She commented it was like ‘This is Your Life’. When she saw the photo pictured here she said out loud: “Oh Mum, my beautiful Mum” and put her hand on the photo and whispered “I miss you so much. Oh how I love you”.
Right there in that moment we felt so privileged to witness such a love, not diminished by time. A love spanning nearly a century. Literally breathtaking in its simplicity and sadness.
The team here at Enable offer both practical and emotional support to clients who are elderly, on their own or vulnerable.
